so what is is GMT ?
GMT is Glass Mat Reinforced Thermoplasitcs, a kind of sheet molding compound with fiber reinforced thermoplastic. It is produced on huge laminators, using a thermoplastic resin and one or more forms of reinforcement. The process yields a lightweight, partially consolidated, semifinished composite in sheet form. Most forms are produced to 1,300 mm to 1,400 mm widths. However, some newer forms are made to greater but proprietary widths. The sheet stock may be cut to size to suit placement in the tool for a specific application and also can incorporate a decorative or functional surface laminated to one side. GMT mould makes possible the production of large parts with low tooling costs and fast cycle times via compression molding. The potential for parts consolidation presents the opportunity to further reduce weight and cost.

The molding temperature depends on the curing system of the resin paste, the thickness of the product, the production efficiency, and the complexity of the structure of the product. The molding temperature must ensure the initiation of the curing system, the smooth progress of the crosslinking reaction, and complete curing.
In general, part having a large thickness should have a lower molding temperature than a thin-walled part, which prevents excessive heat produce heat build-up inside the thick part. If the thickness of the product is 25-32 mm, the molding temperature is 135-145 °C. Thinner part can be formed at 171 °C.
The increase of the molding temperature can shorten the corresponding curing time; conversely, when the molding temperature is lowered, the corresponding curing time needs to be extended. The molding temperature should be chosen between the fastest cure speed and the optimum molding conditions. It is generally believed that the SMC molding temperature is between 120 and 155 °C.

In order to reduce the measurement error, try to use the plug gauge and the device under test to measure under isothermal conditions. Use a force that is as small as possible. Do not push the plug gauge into the hole or push it sideways. Third, when measuring, the plug gauge should be inserted or pulled out along the axis of the hole, and should not be tilted; plug gauges should be inserted into the hole, and it is not allowed to turn or shake the plug gauge. Fourth, it is not allowed to use plug gauges to detect unclean workpieces. Fifth, the plug gauge is one of the precision measuring instruments. It should be handled with care and must not touch the working surface. Sixth, plug gauges should be cleaned with a clean soft cloth or fine cotton yarn immediately after each use, coated with a thin layer of anti-rust oil, into a special box, dry place storage Seventh, the plug regulations should be subject to periodic verification. The verification period shall be determined by the measurement department. When used, the correct operation of the gauge can be summarized as “light”, “positive”, “cold”, “full”. Light: Handle gently, securely and steadily; do not throw at random; do not collide with the workpiece, check after the workpiece is stable; check to lightly plug the light card, not hard card hard plug. Positive: The position must be placed positively, and it cannot be skewed, otherwise the test result will not be reliable. Cold: The inspection can only be carried out when the workpiece to be inspected is at the same temperature as the gauge. It is not possible to test the workpiece that has just been processed and is still hot. The precision workpiece should be isothermally measured with the gauge.
Full: Gauges are required to test the workpiece in order to obtain correct and reliable inspection results. The plug end must be inspected over the entire length of the hole and must be tested in 2 or 3 axial planes; It may be tested at both ends of the hole.
